Friday, February 8th, 2013 Clean Water Project Featured in Local News!

The 2012 Little Heroes Foundation Clean Water Project in China was featured in the Deseret News on Thursday, February 7.

The article reads as follows:

In 2012, the Little Heroes Foundation was able to install clean water machines in 25 boarding schools located in Zhongwei, China. It is estimated an additional 30,000 children a year will have access to safe drinking water from the machines.

Located in the desert region of the Ningxia Providence, Zhongwei is a poor area where the average income is $535 yearly per household and access to clean water is limited. Children in the area are the most vulnerable to disease through drinking the water, which causes them to be too sick to attend school.

Little Heroes partnered with the YangFan Foundation, which was able to develop an efficient system of purchasing and installing clean water filtering machines in local boarding schools.

So far, machines have been installed in 25 boarding schools. The Little Heroes Foundation has committed to fund another 25 schools for the drinking water machines. The machines have helped 14,983 children thus far. It is estimated that each year, an additional 30,000 children will be helped by receiving access to the clean water.

Founded in 2007 by Travis and LaRee Hansen, the Little Heroes Foundation’s mission is to “improve the mental and physical well being of children throughout the world by serving, supporting and enhancing human life,” according to its website. Members of the organization choose one major project each year which they help plan, fund and oversee.

Along with its sponsor support, the Little Heroes Foundation has received generous private donations. All donations received by the organization are used to help improve lives around the world. For more information on the Little Heroes Foundation, visit its website atlittleheroesfoundation.org.

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 Little Heroes Supports Orphans in Russia

The Little Heroes Foundation has provided a grant to the Seltsovsky orphanage in Russia to help fund program materials for 50 children living there. The orphanage is run by the To Children with Love organization, which has brought over 5,000 children out of poverty since their beginning in 1998.

The main focus at the orphanage is “de-institutionalizing” orphaned and abandoned children. This is accomplished by a four-part program which includes 1) recognition and celebration of each child’s birthday, 2) opportunities to socialize with children who live in traditional families, 3) help with building attachment skills and peer relationships, and 4) taking a variety of like skills classes such as woodworking, sewing, cooking, etc. This four-part program has proven to help each child increase their self-esteem, interact with people different from themselves, motivate them for a better standard of living, and become eager to be a full participant in society.

The Little Heroes Foundation is proud to be supporting the 50 orphaned children living in the Seltsovsky orphanage and hopes to provide them with a greater ability to overcome their current situations.

Monday, February 6th, 2012 LHF Attends the Jazz vs. Kings game

A big thank you to the Rose Foundation for donating a suite to the Little Heroes Foundation for the Utah Jazz vs. Sacramento Kings game on January 28. LHF was able to invite the families of Gavin and Mekhai (pictured below) to attend the game.

Gavin and Mekhai are the best of friends and they had a wonderful time dancing to the music and watching the basketball game.  It was a treat to meet their families and watch their kids enjoy the atmosphere of the basketball game.

Former BYU basketball star Travis Hansen continues to give back to the community as he hosts the fourth annual Travis Hansen Charity Basketball Camp this week.
Hansen, who played at BYU from 2000 – 2003, developed the charity basketball camp in an effort to teach young basketball players core values of service and sportsmanship.
All proceeds from the camp strengthen the efforts of the Little Heroes Foundation, founded by Hansen and his wife, LaRee, to improve the lives of children.

“I’ve been to camps since I was six years old, and I just saw a niche that no one else was doing,” Hansen said. “The kids have the opportunity to compete, to have fun, to learn how to be a good teammate, to learn how to win and lose, and to learn how to be part of a team.”
The basketball camp, set to take place today through Friday at the Flash Factory in Lehi, provides basketball players ages 6-18 the opportunity to strengthen their basketball fundamentals, while understanding the importance of serving others. BYU basketball head coach Dave Rose will be featured at this year’s camp, along with former BYU basketball player Marty Haws and current BYU guard Charles Abouo. The camp focuses on helping young basketball players develop their dribbling  and shooting skills through repetition.
The highlight of the camp is a service project the children participate in on the second day. Through the Little Heroes Foundation, Hansen has been able to build two schools in Mali, Africa, for children in need. Service projects at the basketball camps from past years included creating school kits and writing notes for the students at these schools, and preparing hygiene kits for less fortunate families locally in Spanish Fork. Annie Sundwall, director of development with the Little Heroes Foundation, plans the logistics for the camp and service project.
“The children that we’ve been able to reach through this service project and through all the projects that we do, they obviously all benefit children,” Sundwall said. “Our mission is to improve the lives of children around the world by seeking out and supporting worthy organizations and programs.”
Children at the camp this year will assemble welcome kits with crayons, activity books, Play-Doh and other items to benefit hospitalized children in Utah. The kits are designed to help children cope with their illnesses and keep them occupied during their stay at the hospital.
Hansen and his wife began the Little Heroes Foundation in Russia, while Hansen was playing professional basketball. The program has local and international connections and looks to help children wherever there is a need. Nature’s Sunshine Products is the primary sponsor for the Little Heroes Foundation and provides funds and gifts for the camp. Their partnership with the Little Heroes Foundation made it possible to renovate a children’s hospital in Russia.
“We truly enjoy working with Travis. He certainly has captured the essence of serving others,” said Eric Graves, director of International Marketing at Nature’s Sunshine. “We look at continuing this partnership for years to come. We’ve seen great benefits come through supporting the Little Heroes Foundation.”
